Camel Trekking in the Sahara: What to Expect
Almost every Morocco desert tour ends the same way: a camel trek into the dunes at Merzouga. Here's what to actually expect.
Timing
Treks are timed around sunset, when the dunes turn shades of orange and pink and the heat of the day has passed. The ride itself takes 45 minutes to an hour to reach camp.
Comfort
Camels are guided in a line by a local handler on foot — you don't need experience, just a scarf to protect against blown sand and a willingness to laugh at the wobble of the first few minutes.
The camp
On our itineraries, including the Fes desert tour, you'll sleep in a semi-permanent Berber-style camp with real beds, a shared dinner around the fire with local music, and a wake-up call before sunrise for anyone who wants to watch the light return over the dunes.
If you have mobility concerns or would prefer a 4x4 dune excursion instead of camel trekking, just let us know when you enquire — it's a simple swap.
