Depart Fes this morning. Cross the Middle Atlas via Midelt, a quiet apple-growing town between the cedar forests and the start of the high desert plateau. Pass through Erfoud, centre of Morocco's fossil trade, on the edge of the Tafilalt palm oasis before the final approach to the dunes. Reach Merzouga on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Ride camels into the Sahara for sunset and spend the night in a desert camp under an open sky of stars.
