Day-by-Day Itinerary

DAY 1

Marrakech to Ouarzazate

Depart Marrakech this morning. Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m), winding through Berber villages, walnut groves and switchback roads with sweeping mountain views. Visit the UNESCO-listed fortified village (ksar) of Ait Ben Haddou, its earthen kasbahs rising from the valley floor, familiar from Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Pass through Ouarzazate, Morocco's 'door of the desert' and home to the Atlas Film Studios, with a stop at the Taourirt Kasbah.

DAY 2

Dades Valley to Merzouga & Erg Chebbi Dunes

Leave Dades Valley and continue toward Merzouga & Erg Chebbi Dunes. Walk beneath the 300-metre limestone walls of the Todra Gorge, one of the most dramatic canyons in the Atlas, carved by the Todra River. Reach Merzouga on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Ride camels into the Sahara for sunset and spend the night in a desert camp under an open sky of stars.

DAY 3

Erfoud & Fossil Country to Fes

Leave Erfoud & Fossil Country and continue toward Fes. Cross the Middle Atlas via Midelt, a quiet apple-growing town between the cedar forests and the start of the high desert plateau. Pass through Ifrane, Morocco's alpine-style 'Switzerland', and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, home to troops of Barbary macaques. Wander Fes el Bali, the largest car-free urban area in the world: tanneries, madrasas, copper souks and a medina that has barely changed since the 9th century. Your tour concludes here.
